Remote-access scams: when “support” asks to control your PC

Updated 10/5/2026 · 4 min read

Remote-access tools like AnyDesk and TeamViewer are legitimate and genuinely useful. They're also the favourite tool of tech-support scammers, because once you let someone in, they can do anything you can.

How the scam usually goes 1. A pop-up, call or email says there's a problem ("your PC is infected", "your account was hacked", "refund department"). 2. They ask you to install a remote-access app and give them the code. 3. Once connected, they "fix" a fake problem, move money, install real malware, or lock you out.

Rules that keep you safe - **Microsoft, your bank and Amazon will never call you** to fix your PC or ask for remote access. - Only allow remote access to someone **you contacted** on a number you looked up yourself. - If a remote-access app appears that you didn't install, remove it and change your passwords from another device. - Never move money or buy gift cards because someone on your screen told you to.

How to check A Keepvik scan lists remote-access software found on your PC and whether it's set to start automatically — so you can spot one you didn't install.
